Larina’s Story…
The Long Version
I was 8 years old and much to my parents’ dismay had just poured a bottle of ketchup in our basement—fake blood to go along with the haunted house I’d created. Entrance was a great deal at just 25 cents and a monster book (my first book) was for sale for just $1.
I guess I’ve always been into pulling things together, marketing, and selling…probably because I grew up with an entrepreneur father (he started his first business when he was 17 and later a chain of Gelato Fresco ice cream stores—imagine beginning a successful ice cream business in upstate New York!) and artist mother (an energetic, compassionate elementary art teacher).
My other lifelong interest has been the human mind—how we think, why we feel and act certain ways, and how we connect with others.
It’s funny how things eventually come together. After being told I was everything from “crazy” to, euphemistically, a “Renaissance person” for pursuing the arts, business, and psychology in college, I graduated at the top of my class from Cornell University and went on to graduate school to pursue a doctorate in psychology. I loved psychology but missed business so I decided to do an MBA concurrently with my doctorate (plus waiting tables and then working full time as a retail store manager…Now, that was crazy!).
After that came one of the great fortunes in my career: I was hired on as clinical faculty at The University of Pennsylvania Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety and supervised by researcher Dr. Edna Foa (named as Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2010). I learned amazingly effective treatments for stress and anxiety, and simultaneously began my coaching business in 2002, helping entrepreneurs gain confidence with public speaking and marketing.
Since then I’ve been working with service business owners and salespeople, helping them understand the needs of their clients and how to confidently communicate the value of what they offer. I love helping people put their own puzzle pieces together to position their business, and build fun and profitable referral relationships. Psychology is at the heart of marketing. I love coaching, consulting, writing, and speaking about these things.
